California Sunset

My favorite time of day. This is a very peaceful time of day, as the earth shuts down for the day. By the way, no filters used in the picture. Many of you may try to picture a blue sky, or a peaceful lake, when attempting to re-center yourself. Whatever place relaxes you will work. Maybe think of the California sunset. Sunset is best here because it’s over the ocean, not the land. And I’m not a morning person. Anyway, think of a place that relaxes you and take in and out a few nice, deep breaths. That will help you settle and reset during a high anxiety moment, as we’re all having currently quite often.

When in doubt, wear your N95.

The Cloud

“The cloud’s there. Don’t worry about the cloud.” -colleague during a meeting about online learning about 1 year ago. It still makes me laugh. It reminds me of all the very 1984-type things we now accept as normal, e.g. Google.

Is Medicine An Exact Science?

Most of you will probably know the answer is no. However, you may not know to what extent it is inexact. I would argue it is shockingly inexact. I say this because our knowledge of the human body and mind is extremely lacking. Probably we know less than 1% of what there is to know. Sounds crazy at first, but really think on it. Consider a prescription drug advertisement. Most of the commercial will discuss all the things the drug may do that you don’t want, or side effects. About 20% of the commercial will discuss what the drug should do. All of those side effects are caused by the drug acting in parts of the body, or binding to receptors that are poorly understood. Medicine cannot be an exact science because of our shocking lack of knowledge. Doctors and other healthcare professionals are constantly faced with decisions, which require them to weigh the pros and cons of a treatment. Only those pros and cons they know about, remember. Think about this the next time you start to criticize your doctor or healthcare professional. I’m not trying to excuse them, but it can be quite difficult. And yes, there are bad doctors and other professionals out there. Medicine is without a doubt a very inexact science. Those of you who’ve studied anything medical know, or have an idea at least, just how inexact. However, fear not because there is still decent medical help out there and we are making impressive progress in increasing our knowledge about the human mind and body. Evidence-based medicine is probably the best option we have right now, as it makes medicine as scientific as possible. In other words, we do what all of the studies tell us to do. That’s about the best we can do for now, and again, we humans continue to make impressive strides in our knowledge.

Hit That Wall While Studying or Working?

We’ve all had it happen. You’re studying or working, and you realize your brain has essentially shut down. It’s telling you, “you need a break.” So take a break then. The key is to know what type of break. If your brain is no longer taking in anything, sleep for a while. If you can’t sleep, take 30 minutes of break time. You choose: listening to music, snacking, Netflix……anything you find relaxing & peaceful. Breathe with awareness, deeply taking in a lot of oxygen. Then, after your break: study or work on laptop, or anything you need to get done, until ready to sleep. Always sleep as much as possible the night before an exam, interview…….anything stressful. Hope it helps.

Water

How much water should I drink?  The simple answer, and probably the best answer, is you should drink when you are thirsty. Be careful not to confuse thirst with hunger, however. Try to be aware of what your body wants because it usually will tell you what it needs. Do not go by rules, such as 8 glasses says a day. This varies widely by gender and size. A good quick check is to look at your urine. Pale yellow is where you want to be. Darker, and you are dehydrated. Almost like water, and you can cut back on drinking. Hope that helps.

RandomProfessor

Please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth where it counts and sometimes questionable taste. I’m turning 50 soon. I don’t know why I have a loose reference to the rolling stones to start my blog, but that’s what came out of my fingers onto the keyboard in the early morning hours. That’s when I finally started a blog, which I’ve thought many times of doing, but never have until now. I am an M.D., but that was many years ago, a previous life almost. I worked in the pacemaker, AICD game for a while. I learned a lot. I also learned a lot working as an Anatomy & Physiology professor. I even worked in Biomedical Research labs, also seemingly a previously lifetime, figuratively not literally. I will say more Random stuff about myself later. I hope you enjoy my blog.
